Modernization of the zoo in Cherkassy

In Autumn 2016 ROSHEN Corporation successfully completed the first stage of modernization of the zoo in Cherkassy. The aim of the project is to create comfortable living conditions for animals and working conditions for employees, as well as to make the zoo more friendly for visitors, particularly for people with special needs. The cost of the project is 17 mln hrn.

The times when zoo visitors could watch animals only from one side through the metal fence have already gone. More and more zoos over the world refuse to use isolated cages, which limit the movements of animals. Nowadays, they create open enclosures with artificial ponds close to natural surroundings, where different kinds of animals can live together while the visitors can see animals from different angles. The idea of this unique project for Ukraine was developed by a creative team together with the director of the zoo.

During the first stage of the project, they built all main structures of covered enclosures, mounted fencing and installed external engineering networks. Closed enclosures, hidden from the visitors’ eyes, will provide old animals with proper living conditions, ensure rest and treatment to animals that need help or preventive care, and will temporarily accept new species before they fill up the permanent zoo exhibition.

The project includes utility rooms - boiler room, feed processing room, two laboratories for animal observation, surveillance room and animal service room. In addition, a new security post and two garages are on the road-map. Visitors will be provided with new public conveniences, also suitable for people with special needs.

The most comfortable and natural environment is arranged with large outdoor enclosures, outdoor artificial ponds, and practical winter premises. The total area of the outdoor enclosures is 2272 m² and ponds is 500 m². The exposition enclosures are intended for 2 bears, 5 wolves, and 4 otters. The design of enclosures is simple and does not try to compete with the genuine natural environment, but still, it is able to provide the animals with the most comfortable living conditions.
